Island Outfitters

Island Outfitters was born under a boutique mentality in a resort wear climate. Once the identity of the company was decided, it was easy to choose the products the company would sell. In New England, there are a few top brands that stand out in the resort wear category; Vineyard Vines, Lilly Pulitzer, Smathers & Branson, Sperry Top-sider and many more.

Once Greg was able to build relationships with these brands, it wasn't long before he began selling them at a rapid pace.

How did you earn your first sales? Which channels are now generating the most traffic and sales for you?

Gregory was born with a natural talent in sales. He could convince anyone they needed a pair of Nantucket red pants within ten minutes of walking into the store. Our customers appreciate the value of a good conversation and good music in our stores. Because of this reason, Island Outfitter's brick and mortar stores remain the channel that generates the most sales for the brand.

In today's day and age however, it has become increasingly important to remain relevant on internet platforms. Therefore, our second most important channel would be our website and social media platforms. We experience a high amount of traffic on Twitter and Instagram platforms helping aid our website traffic as well.

Tell us about the back-end of your business. What tools and apps do you use to run your store? How do you handle shipping and fulfillment?

The tools and apps we use to run our stores are fairly basic and straightforward, because of the reasons behind our brick and mortar success.

We use most relevant social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Foursquare and LinkedIn. We also use other apps that help gauge our traffic on these platforms like TweetDeck, Followers (for Instagram), Klout, Facebook Insights and others as well. As for shipping and fufillment, we ship all of our products from one of our seven stores, depending on availability. Because of location, many of the stores carry different ranges and sizes of products, so availability varies.

What are your top recommendations for new ecommerce entrepreneurs?

New store owners should understand the absolute importance of remaining relevant in today's changing retail landscape. Having knowledge in social media, social media trends, website trends and other things is extremely important in keeping your customers interested and buying.

At the end of the day, the customer is the most important part of the business, so keeping them in mind in everything you do is the best way to stay successful!
