Pet Playgroundz offers humane non-electric dog fence kits and professional installation services within 150 miles of our headquarters in Connecticut. Our customers love their dogs, as do we - and we want to make sure that every dog is kept happy, safe, and healthy.
Our non-electric dog fence is the best way to let your dog run free, and is a great alternative to invisible wireless pet fences. We have spent the last 6 years perfecting our unique hybrid fence.
How did you earn your first sales? Which channels are now generating the most traffic and sales for you?
Educating people about our product is one of our biggest hurdles. Most people know about invisible wireless fences, but many don't even know about non-electric dog fence solutions. We needed to educate customers and to do that we turned to social networks and platforms such as YouTube to educate the public about our DIY dog fence kits.
Although we do advertise through the typical avenues such as Google AdWords, social networking has proven to be the best way to educate individuals and convert those leads into sales.
Tell us about the back-end of your business. What tools and apps do you use to run your store? How do you handle shipping and fulfillment?
Prior to using Shopify, Pet Playgroundz used Wordpress to serve as our backend. It definitely did its job but we plateaued as making updates to our products (and variants), and especially making temporary layout changes during different promotions took an enormous amount of time. Now, we use Shopify as our hosting provider, and our merchant solution.
Because Shopify is so popular we were able to utilize tools like Zapier to communicate with BaseCRM directly. Zapier, Wufoo, Base CRM, Zopim Chat, and the Refersion Affiliate program are all tools that we utilize and that integrate with Shopify with very little work. Our Shipping and fulfillment is handled through various warehouses that we have contracts with. Our largest warehouse is in Connecticut.
What are your top recommendations for new ecommerce entrepreneurs?
Usability is key. Fancy features look cool and might attract individuals but you need an e-commerce store that does its job and that is to allow customers to find the product they want, and purchase it. In our case, education is a big part of that process and therefore we kept a clean site yet we still utilize multimedia elements, and we give customers the ability to customize their product during checkout. Shopify makes that incredibly easy to do.
